Improving Skills in Implementing ASAM Criteria (ASAM PPC-2R)
David Mee-Lee, M.D.
June 19, 2012
Fargo, ND
While many are familiar with the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria, there is still great variation in how care coordinators and clinicians use ASAM multidimensional assessment (MDA) to determine level of care, length of stay and when to transfer or discharge a client.
This one-day workshop is designed to review the underlying principles of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria (PPC) and their role in individualized treatment and care management. Specific hands-on exercises will help participants implement the ASAM Criteria to determine and explain placement decisions. It will help clinicians and care managers improve communication around assessment and treatment planning.
Educational Objectives:
Participants will be able:
1. To review the underlying concepts and principles of the ASAM Patient Placement Criteria.
2. To describe the role of imminent danger and severity profiles in triage and placement decisions.
3. To apply ASAM Criteria and practice multidimensional assessment to individualize service strategies and level of care.
4. To identify and discuss how to communicate about appropriate client care between care managers and providers.
Workshop Leader:
David Mee-Lee, M.D. is a board-certified psychiatrist, and is certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM). He trains and consults both nationally and internationally. Dr. Mee-Lee is Chief Editor of the American Society of Addiction Medicine’s (ASAM) Patient Placement Criteria and is Senior Vice President of The Change Companies. Dr. Mee-Lee is also Chair of the Coalition for National Clinical Criteria.
